The guppy fishing fishers are among Australia’s most popular and iconic species, and their traditional livelihoods have been threatened by habitat loss and overfishing.
But a group of conservationists are trying to help them back onto the land, by taking a different tack.
They’re calling for a new fishery model to be introduced that would be based on the conservation and rehabilitation of the guppies themselves.
It’s a controversial proposal, with a lot of environmental concerns and concerns about the impact of the fishery on the guppe fishers’ lives.
